In 1874 two small farmhouses with an intermediate hay barn together formed "La Coquille". In 1970 it was transformed into one house, in 1994 a large renovation gave it the shape it has today. The swimming pool was built on the foundations of one of the old farmhouses. During the renovation the old character outside was maintained, on the inside all 21st century comforts have been added.

La Coquille is situated on a plot of around  1 ha (200m x 50m). There is a large playground (30m x 15m), an orchard with fruit, walnuts and figs, lots of grassland for children to play, a swing and slide and of course a large swimming pool right behind the house (11m x 5m). The depth of the pool varies from 40cm to 2,50 meters, so small children and adults will have a lot of fun in the water. The pool is equipped with an electrical cover (legal obligation in France), for the safety of your children as well as keeping the temperature of the water comfortable. A swim at night? The underwater lighting adds a special effect.

Ground floor

19th century from the outside, all comfort of the 21st century on the inside. You enter “La Coquille” in the central hall on the ground floor. On this floor there are two large bedrooms (30m2 and 18m2), both with double beds. Indeed, the large Northern European legs will find space here, the beds are 220cm x 180cm. Between both bedrooms you will find a bathroom (8m2) with WC, sink and separate shower. In the hallway is the door to the second bathroom (16m2) with WC, double sink, separate shower and bathtub. Also in this bathroom: washing machine and dryer.

First floor

The solid wooden stairs take you to the residential floor. Living room (40m2) with satellite TV (Dutch TV, but also BBC World, CNN and Sky news), DVD, CD and VHS player. Adjacent to the living room is the master bedroom (30m2), also with a large double bed (220 x 180cm) and room for an extra bed. On the other side of the living room is the coziest place of “La Coquille”: the large kitchen / dining room of 40m2. The large dining table which sits 12 people is placed directly in front of the man-sized fireplace. The kitchen itself is equipped with a dishwasher, two refrigerators, a microwave and a stove.

The porch overlooking the pool and garden is partly sheltered. Terrace heaters allow you to enjoy the French air also in slightly cooler times of the year.

Attic

In the living room, another wooden stairs take you up to the attic. This large bedroom has one double bed (200 x 180cm) and two single beds (200 x 90cm).

“La Coquille” is situated on the edge of a forest in one of the most beautiful areas of the Périgord Vert in the Dordogne. The village of Mareuil-sur-Belle is around 3 kilometers of the house.

Mareuil-sur-Belle is a characteristic French village with all daily supplies and facilities: a bakery, a small supermarket, post office, pharmacy, GP, dentist, the “Tabac” with English newspapers during summer months, and some dining possibilities. The restaurant on the central square can prepare pizzas-to-go if you really don’t feel like cooking.

A 20 minute drive will take you to Riberac, where you will find the larger supermarkets of E. Leclerc and Intermarché. On Fridays, Riberac hosts one of the largest markets of the region. Beautiful Périgueux is 30 minutes away, with a large shopping centre including an Auchan.

Some major Dordogne attractions are nearby: the beautiful villages of Brantôme and Bourdeilles, the magnificent caves of Villars with prehistoric drawings and the city of Périgueux.

Golf enthusiasts will be indulged by the courses of Périgueux and La Prèze. On the Dronne river many beautiful canoe trips are possible for all ages (starting at 6 years). Around “La Coquille” various MTB trails and other bike rides are plotted. (It is for a reason the Tour de France passed Mareuil-sur-Belle a couple of years ago…). In the town is a tennis court.

More activities for the whole family? Airparc Perigord, where you are challenged to complete a trail through the woods, including rope ladders and pathways high above the ground. Also: Le Bournat, a visit to the past, where you can experience village life in 1900.

But don’t forget that spending a lovely day at the pool of “La Coquille” is a must too!

The region is famous for its foie gras and confit de canard, as well as beautiful wines. You can really treat yourself in the many good restaurants nearby (Brantôme, Bourdeilles, Périgueux). On local markets (Riberac, Brantôme, but also the small market in Mareuil-sur-Belle) many regional products are offered. You are always invited to taste them!

From Calais, La Coquille is a 480 mi. drive.

From Calais follow the A26 / A1 to Paris. Pass Paris through the Boulevard Périferique, the route A4/A86 or the Francilienne. Take the A10 to Orléans, Blois, Tours and Poitiers. At exit Poitiers-Sud / Angoulème follow the N10. Before Angoulème follow the signs Périgueux that will take you around the city. The D939 will take you to Mareuil-sur-Belle. After reservation you will receive the itinerary to La Coquille.
